Is it Possible to Reduce the Impact of Sound with Acoustic Flooring?

While homes and offices can manage noise, there are some set-ups that require a quiet environment. Old age retreats, hospitals, and schools are examples of such setups. In this blog, we will discuss the use of flooring to reduce the impact of sound.

Different types of sound need to be insulated

Occupants of a set-up can get disturbed by the sound emanating from the traffic on an adjacent road. While this is impact sound, airborne sound stems from people, speakers, and instruments. If the building material is not noise-absorbent, it will increase the disturbance due to noise.

The use of certain materials in acoustic flooring can help in noise reduction

A flooring contractor can guide a person in choosing the best materials that will insulate noise. The following materials can be suggested by the contractor.

  • Carpet – Carpet can be a good noise insulator. Because of this, it is preferred by hotels and hospitals. This is especially true for high-pile carpets with long fibers. Carpets with a thick pad underneath can also deliver good results.
  • Cork – Cork flooring is a cost-effective option that can be availed by schools and old-age retreats. However, it is prone to get stained, making the place look ugly. Therefore, it is used as an underlay to provide acoustic insulation.
  • Rubber – Rubber flooring is versatile because it ensures slip resistance. Therefore, it is a good choice for gyms and schools.
  • Vinyl – Because it is durable, vinyl flooring can be installed for sound insulation in places with heavy foot traffic. Because of its durability, it will not undergo wear and tear for decades.
  • Hardwood – Softer hardwoods like pine, spruce, and cedar are excellent choices for sound absorption.

Cost of acoustic flooring

The cost will depend on the soundproofing material used in the acoustic flooring. Vinyl is comparatively cheaper compared to carpets. The solution may require the application of soundproof subfloors, underlayment, and pads. Specialized glues are used to reduce impact sound and airborne sound. A flooring contractor will be able to provide a quote based on the requirements.
